Using Your Body and Brain to Feel Younger, Stronger, and More Fit

( - According to a recent calculation by the U.S. Census Bureau, the average life expectancy for an American in the year 2010 is 78 years old, while the life expectancy of an American born in 1975 was only 72. As life expectancy numbers continue to climb each year, Americans are faced with reconciling the joy of a longer life with the limitations of an older body.

In Change Your Age, Frank Wildman, PhD, urges readers to rediscover the youthful capabilities of their bodies by sharpening their awareness of how they move. Through several mind-body assessment tools including a revolutionary “mobility index” and over thirty illustrated movement lessons sequenced according to the five core positions of human movement (lying down, sitting, kneeling, crouching, and standing), Wildman reveals how people of all ages and physical capacities can achieve greater coordination, balance, and performance.

The Change Your Age program is based on the principles of the Feldenkrais Method®, developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, a physicist who taught himself to walk again (after suffering a crippling knee injury) through intense study of movement and its formation in the body. Taught internationally by trained Feldenkrais practitioners, the Feldenkrais Method is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and focused awareness to improve flexibility, enhance agility, and reduce pain.

Complete with Change Your Age program success stories, Wildman explains how readers can customize the program to fit their individual needs, or use one of his ready made routines to:
Energize their body at the start of the day
Give themselves a fitness boost
Learn to stand comfortably—even in high heels
Fight the painful symptoms of TMJ (Tempro-Mandibular Joint disorder)
Relax their neck while sitting at a computer
De-stress before bed.

In an era when people are living longer, Wildman encourages us to live better—without injury or pain—and reminds us that age is just a number.

Frank Wildman, CFT, PhD, is an educator to thousands, an internationally recognized authority in the Feldenkrais Method, and a leader of the "Movement Movement." He is the founder and director of the Feldenkrais Movement Institute and maintains a private practice in Berkeley, California.
