(HealthNewsDigest.com) - In the past, dentists attempted to replace or keep teeth through procedures such as bridges, root canals, and fixed dentures. Unfortunately, bridges require healthy adjacent teeth to be cut down, root canal treated teeth can fail, and dentures can be unstable. Dental implants provide a solution to all of these problems, eliminating a number of concerns associated with natural teeth, including decay.

Dr. John Paul Gallardo has treated thousands of patients suffering from missing teeth and gum problems, successfully. He has a marvelous deal of experience with dental implants, and he is regarded as an expert by his peers within several dentistry fields.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is one of the numerous options available today when it comes to replacing a missing tooth. Implants are often manufactured devices which can be placed surgically within the lower or upper jaw, where they become the setting for your replacement teeth. Implants are made specifically with materials that have been proven to be safe for use within the human body.

A tooth restored through implant will consist of three major parts, including:

ü  The restoration: the crown, or part that looks like a tooth, typically made using porcelain and fused to a metal alloy.

ü  The abutment: this is made of either porcelain, gold or titanium, and is attached to the implant using a screw, connecting it to the crown.

ü  The implant: usually made of titanium, is placed within the lower or upper jawbone.

Single tooth replacement

Single tooth replacements or implants can be ideal for people who are missing one tooth or more. An implant is carefully placed into an opening that your dentist makes into your jawbone using surgery. Once the implant has attached itself to your bone, it can perform as the new anchor for the crown that is used to provide your new tooth.

There are a number of reasons why someone suffering from a missing tooth may decide to take this option. Sometimes, a gap between your teeth can be obvious when you speak, or smile, which is a confidence issue for some people. Furthermore, depending on the location of the missing tooth, you may find that your speech is somehow affected. A molar that is missing may not impact your appearance or speech, but it can make chewing more difficult.

When a tooth is missing, the force that exists upon the remaining teeth can begin to change. Your bite can start to change in an effort compensate for the tooth that is lost, leading to a risk for extra pressure on the jaw joints, and increased discomfort. Sometimes, if a missing tooth is not replaced, it can lead surrounding teeth to shift slightly. When this happens, tartar and harmful plaque can begin to gather in difficult to manage places that are created by the moving teeth. Over time, this issue can lead to problems like tooth decay.

Are dental implants right for you?

There are a number of reasons why dental implants may be the ideal solution to your teeth-related problems. For example, if you are missing a tooth that somehow affects your smile, you could be an ideal candidate for implants, which would give you that complete grin you've been looking for.

If you feel that your dentures are too loose, and often lead to sore gums because of food trapped beneath the bridgework, or friction, then dental implants could be the answer to your problems.
