(HealthNewsDigest.com)  -  AAA projects more than 38 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend reflecting the second-highest travel volume on record for this holiday, and the most since 2005.  Spurred by the lowest gas prices in more than a decade, about 700,000 more people will travel compared to last year.  The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, May 26 to Monday, May 30.  Nearly 34 million (89 percent) will drive to their destinations, an increase of 2.1 percent over last year.  Air travel is expected to increase 1.6 percent over last year, with 2.6 million Americans taking to the skies.  Travel by other modes of transportation, including cruises, trains and buses, is expected to be down 2.3 percent, to 1.6 million travelers.   Lower gas prices, a strong labor market and rising personal income are motivating people to travel this holiday period, says AAA.  Motorists will save an average of 47 cents a gallon on fuel costs compared to last year; $1.39 a gallon compared to 2014.  Travelers flying to their destination will also experience a cost savings.  With lower jet fuel costs, average roundtrip air rates for the top 40 domestic markets are down 26 percent compared to last year, and car rental rates have decreased 3 percent.   For the full report, visit www.newsroom.aaa.com.
