Sinus Pressure Headaches - Is There a Barometer in Your Head?
May 22, 2013 - 2:56:31 PM
According to Dr. Pritikin, air-filled sinus cavities in the face and forehead may not be able to equalize rapid or extreme changes in barometric pressure, leading to pain in these areas. Some people experience pain in their forehead or cheeks that can mimic a migraine headache or a toothache every time they fly or scuba dive or every time it rains.
Dr. Pritikin adds that he advises patients who are susceptible to these types of headaches to take decongestant medication, such as Sudafed or Tylenol Sinus, prior to a big storm or a flight. "If you know you are a candidate for this type of headache, prevention is key," says Dr. Pritikin. "And if medical therapy is not sufficient, other steps may be taken to address this problem."
