(HealthNewsDigest.com) - David H. Murdock, Chairman of the Dole Food Company is 86 years old. He takes no medication, not even aspirin, and no nutrient supplements. He exercises 50 to 60 minutes a day and has 30 to 40 servings of fruits and vegetables weekly. With this remarkable health and longevity, Mr. Murdock put together The Dole Nutrition Handbook: What to Eat and How To Live For A Longer, Healthier Life.

The book is eye candy, loaded with exquisite, tempting color photos of beautiful fruits and vegetables. It is an easy, visual read stuffed with charts, information boxes, nutrition tips and cautions. The message is clear, fruits and vegetables are the key to a healthy, long life. Vitamin and mineral supplements are not needed. Though health professionals would agree with this message, most would also be less strident in their advice to avoid all supplements.

The book is divided into 3 sections: Part 1 What you need to eat every day; Part 2 Total fitness from head to toe: and Part 3 Slim down, shape up with the Dole diet and fitness plan.

Part 1 goes over the function and need of carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Each nutrient is presented in a page or two with interesting facts, tables and visuals for an informative, easy read. The emphasis is on plant foods and this is a minor drawback. When protein is discussed, meat and poultry is mentioned but the only visual for this section is dry beans. Daily needs are expressed as AMDR (acceptable macronutrient distribution), AI (adequate intake), and UL (tolerable upper intake level). Though all these values are correct and based on the Dietary Reference Intakes, most consumers are not familiar with these terms.

Part 2 examines the concept, you are what you eat. The section is further divided into – Heart Health, Eye Health, Pregnancy Health, Brain Health, Joint Health, Bone Health, and Immunity. Each section starts with the fruits and vegetables that will support this issue or body part and a statement from an expert in the area. It is an interesting way to discuss preventative health and is a useful approach for readers as it empowers them to take control of individual health issues.

Part 3 focuses on weight control with each section, again, backed up by an expert statement. It begins with a chapter discussing the health risks of excess weight. Next the book discusses weight loss facts and myths. There is a comprehensive chapter on exercise and health with simple workout plans. A section that is very well done is a chart, Eat Yourself Back from Injury, offering foods that will help heal specific injuries. Though this information is not new, it is presented in a novel way.

The last part of this section is the Dole Diet. It is a two-week diet plan with recipes. Each recipe provides a very extensive nutrition analysis. Though the diet plan is sound with 1,600 calories, 31% fat, 4% saturated fat, and 49% carbohydrate, it may be somewhat ambitious for a busy person. The diet recommends a good deal of cooking and 12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

The entire book is beautiful, laid out well, offering a quick, visual read. It allows the reader to use the information they wish without having to wade through pages of text. The index is comprehensive making information retrieval easy. Educated consumers will enjoy this book and professionals will find it helpful as a quick reference full of tips they can reuse with clients.
