Injectables for the Face - What are the Benefits?
Dec 4, 2013 - 3:01:50 PM

( - Injectables for the face can serve a number of functions, but they primarily exist to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and provide the face with more volume to create a more youthful appearance. There are many different injectable products on the market which serve different purposes and consist of different materials. Injectable fillers, also referred to as soft tissue fillers and dermal fillers, work by restoring lost volume and plumping the skin. Neuromodulators like Botox, on the other hand, work by altering the underlying muscles responsible for certain wrinkles. Injectable treatments are not as invasive as other cosmetic procedures like the facelift and they can be used on many areas of the face such as the forehead, eyes, mouth, and any other places where wrinkles, fine lines or diminished volume exists.

Botox is the most popular wrinkle treatment today. Botox is a neuromodulator, not a filler, and it works by relaxing the underlying muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles like frown lines and crow's feet. Injectable fillers like Restylane, Sculptra, Hylaform gel and collagen add volume to plump and fill in lines and creases and other areas of diminished volume. They can also be used to augment the lips.

The injectable treatment is a relatively brief procedure that involves the use of a small syringe to inject the solution. Prior to administering the solution, the physician may apply a topical anesthesia to the skin to numb it for the needle. The needle will be gently placed into the skin and the solution will be injected into the targeted areas of the face. The entire process will normally take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to complete depending on the nature of the procedure. After the solution has been injected, the physician may provide a small bag of ice to alleviate any pain or swelling on the face.

Unlike more invasive procedures that require lengthy recovery periods, the patient will usually be able to make a full recovery on the same day and proceed with other daily activities with little to no discomfort. The results of the procedure are often visible within a few hours of the procedure. While injectables are very effective at what they do, they are not a permanent solution  as their effects typically last between six months to a year or two depending on the solution that was used, where it was injected, and the how the patient responds to the treatment in general. In many cases, the physician will recommend follow-up visits to touch up the targeted areas as needed. Given that there are a variety of injectable products available for this procedure; you will need to discuss your needs with your physician to determine the right one for the results that you are trying to achieve.
