Cosmetic Surgery: Now Is the Time to Look Your Best
Jul 15, 2013 - 4:42:29 PM
Although summer may be the right time to look your best, certain times of the year are better than others for specific cosmetic surgeries, and it's important to plan ahead.
There were more than 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the United States last year. Women rushed to doctors in record numbers to have breast augmentations, liposuctions, facelifts, eyelid surgeries and rhinoplasty more than any other procedures, while men opted for rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, liposuction, male breast reduction and facelift surgery.
Patient populations can be variable, but most patients, and the cosmetic surgeons who perform them, believe body surgeries should be planned at the beginning of the year to look good for the beach or in outdoor sportswear by the time summer rolls around. Autumn through winter can be an opportune time for facial surgeries, especially facelifts, eyelid lifts, nose reshaping and laser skin resurfacing. Holidays can provide the extra motivating factor you need to get the job done, as well as some extra recovery time.
Don't Let the Heat Get You Down
So, if you're looking around by the pool and the heat has got you down, consider that temperature matters. Summer heat may be making you swell already, with or without surgery. Plus, sweat can cause bacteria and lead to infection if it penetrates an incision.
That's why when deciding on any surgery, considering aftercare is an important element to include in any timeline. Depending on the procedure, recovery time could take a day or two, but it may be a few weeks before you can resume an active schedule. So, if there's an upcoming social event, strenuous activity or even a vacation in your future, plan around your surgery accordingly.
Cosmetic surgery should be a personal decision and not one that is pursued at the urging of friends, co-workers or family. The best time for choosing to have a procedure is the time it is right for you, when you're physically, emotionally and financially ready to handle it - summer, fall, winter, or spring.
