(HealthNewsDigest.com) - It appears there is an inverse relationship between the job market and cosmetic surgery! As the job market has plummeted, the popularity of cosmetic surgery has skyrocketed. “In the last few weeks, since the Lehman debacle and the AIG scare, more and more professionals have been coming to my office for a little cosmetic surgical rejuvenation,” notes Dr. Amiya Prasad, New York Facial and Eyelid Cosmetic Surgeon. Many individuals, fearful of losing their jobs, or the unfortunate victims who have already been thrown back into the job market, know that they will be competing against, and interviewed by, by much younger people.

Whether we like it or not, we are judged by how we look. Statistics show that the more attractive a person is, the more opportunities come their way. Therefore, those who have lost their jobs recently, especially in the financial markets, are finding themselves in the plastic surgeon’s office. They may feel stressed, but they don’t want to look stressed. “I think men and women, from their mid-30s and up, believe they need as much of a competitive edge as possible,” notes Dr. Prasad. Career-minded professionals seek different “boosts” depending upon their age. In their 30’s, many professionals see Dr. Prasad for Botox Cosmetic to soften the worry lines that are just forming around their eyes and on their forehead. They also take advantage of preventative treatments such as microdermabrasion to smooth out their complexion.

Forty-year-olds come in for Botox, other facial fillers, Eyelid Lifts (this is the time when age really begins to show in the eyes (puffiness, hooded lids), the Cool Lipo Chin Lift or a Mini Facelift. Men, in particular, have been turning to Eyelid Lifts as a way to look younger, friendlier and more approachable.
But perhaps the most demanding group are the individuals in their 50s who now find themselves back in the job market competing with folks 20 years their junior. These people seek Eyelid Lifts, Facelifts, Rhinoplasty, Botox, and fillers. “This is not about vanity,” notes Dr. Prasad, “it’s about looking good, and feeling good. Cosmetic surgery is the new must have career tool.”

It is well-documented that good-looking people make more money than everyone else. Taller men make more money than shorter men. According to some research, if a woman is just 13 pounds overweight, she is penalized at work. We are programmed to treat good-looking people better and it's pretty much impossible to overcome this tendency. Research shows that salary discrepancy is true even in law firms, where the partners doing the hiring are acutely aware of how illegal it is to favor good-looking people. “I’ve observed that cosmetic surgery is for the go-getters and career-minded, and that is a trend which is here to stay,” notes Prasad.
