(HealthNewsDigest.com) - 2013 has not been a kind year for allergy sufferers and this year's allergy season is likely to extend longer into fall months than usual. Board-certified Otolarynologist Dr. Jordan Pritikin at Chicago Nasal & Sinus Center discusses why we're experiencing a lengthened allergy season and what sufferers can do to get through the next few months.

"Typically allergy season lasts from April through September. Unfortunately, it's likely we'll see allergy season lasting through October this year," says Dr. Pritikin. "There are many different factors that come into play for drastic allergy seasons including higher temperatures, precipitation levels in the winter and likely climate change."

Dr. Pritikin continues to explain that the changing climate and historically high levels of carbon dioxide helped nourish trees, but also helped increase pollen, mold and the release of spores. "Climate change helped spring come a little earlier than usual, which led to an earlier and more intense start of allergy season," comments Dr. Pritikin. "In addition, we've seen the length of allergy season steadily increasing over the last decade or so, and this season is no exception."

There are a couple more months of high allergen levels expected, and luckily there are methods and medicines available to combat the symptoms. "The best way to combat allergies is to stay ahead of them and be proactive," continues Dr. Pritikin. "For those who are just not feeling the effects of allergy season, I suggest treatments such as allergy drops, steroid nasal sprays and allergy shots."
