(HealthNewsDigest.com) - 50 million Americans suffer from allergies.1 And it’s more than just a spring fling. Ragweed, grass and pollen are a few of the allergens that make their presence known during the fall months – wreaking havoc on noses, throats and especially the eyes.

In fact, people who suffer from allergies say their #1 most bothersome and most experienced allergy symptom is itchy eyes.2

With new over-the-counter treatments, fall allergies don’t have to be an eye sore any longer.

New VISINE® ALL DAY EYE ITCH RELIEF provides all day relief for itchy, allergy eyes due to indoor and outdoor allergens like pollen, ragweed, grass, animal hair and dander. It works within minutes and lasts up to 12 hours. It’s the original prescription strength without the prescription,” says optometrist Dr. Elise Brisco.

“It contains the powerful antihistamine Ketotifen Fumarate, which relieves allergy-induced eye itchiness,” Dr. Brisco says. “Ketotifen Fumarate works by blocking H1 or allergy receptors on the eye, and decreasing the release of histamine from cells in the eye,” she adds.

While arming yourself with the right ingredients is key, there are proactive steps you can take to prevent eye discomfort before it starts. Ward off eye irritation by reducing the accumulation of allergens. Try the following:

If you’re indoors…

Wash linens and clothes regularly.
Cacuum and dust often to reduce allergens, such as dust and pet dander.
Keep windows shut to keep out ragweed and other outdoor allergens.
Run the air condition or air filter to sift out allergens. Make sure to keep those air filters clean and replace them regularly.
Put allergy-proof covers on pillows, mattresses, and comforters to ward off dust mites.
If you’re outdoors…

Check the pollen count before going outside. FYI: Pollen counts tend to be highest between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Shower after being outdoors to remove allergens that may have stuck to you. Use a sterile saline eye wash to clean your eyes.
Do not hang laundry to dry outdoors because allergens may stick to the clothes.
Consider wearing glasses or sunglasses, as they can act as a barrier or shield to minimize allergens from sticking to your eyes.
If you prefer to wear contact lenses, choose a daily disposable lens, which can minimize accumulation of allergens, as well. (Note: contact lens wearers can use VISINE® ALL DAY EYE ITCH RELIEF, but need to remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 10 minutes before reinserting contact lenses.)
