(HealthNewsDigest.com) - ADD, ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia are diagnosed at an alarming rate. It is estimated that around 16 million children are diagnosed with severe attention, behavioral and learning problems. A decade ago autism was considered rare, now 1 out of every 88 children, or 1 in 54 boys have autism. Many parents and physicians resort to medication and other methods to aid in some of these disorders, but Dr. Robert Melillo author of Disconnected Kids believes that nutrition and what children eat play a major role in disorders like ADHD and autism.

Dr. Melillo notes, “Parents know the importance of a balanced diet but in truth only one percent of young people between the ages of two and nineteen eat a healthy diet. On average, that same age group receives 40 percent of their daily caloric intake in the form of fat, most of which is from saturated fat.” Per day, children should be eating 6 to 11 servings of grain, 3 to 5 servings of vegetables, 2 to 4 servings of fruit, 2 to 3 servings of dairy products and 5 to 7 ounces of meat.

Eating foods that are rich in fatty acids are very important for children with neurological disorders, some of the recommended foods include: soy, walnut & canola oils, flax seeds, beans including soy, kidney and navy, walnuts, tofu and cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines).

Dr. Robert Melillo is an internationally known lecturer, author, educator, researcher and clinician specializing in the areas of neurology, rehabilitation, neuropsychology and neurobehavioral disorders in children. He developed Hemispheric Integration Therapy (H.I.T.); a multi-modal approach to the remediation of ADHD, dyslexia, autism, Asperger’s, Tourette’s, learning disabilities and processing disorders along with other neurobehavioral disabilities found in children. Dr. Melillo has been regularly featured on Fox News and has written two books for parents focusing on brain imbalances in children; Disconnected Kids and Reconnected Kids.
