Have An Aging Backwards Mom's Day

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - The tradition of honoring and celebrating motherhood can be traced back to ancient roots, including the annual festival to honor the ancient Egyptian Goddess, Isis, who was commonly considered the Mother of the Pharaohs. Ancient Greeks and Romans also had similar celebrations. Modern-day Mother's Day began with a proclamation by poet and activist Julia Ward Howe from New York City in 1870. As a Mom myself, I'm grateful to Julia for her brilliant idea. Who doesn't love being wined and dined, receiving flowers, chocolates and, sometimes, even nice "trinkets?" Of course, we want to look and feel our best for our special day and here are some tips to help you rejuvenate and refresh for Mom's Day. Do these on Saturday and you'll be ready for your special day on Sunday.

1) Manicure/pedicure. If you have the time on Saturday, pop into one of those walk-in, no-appointment-needed nail salons and treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure. Try a nice spring pink for your toes and opt for a clean, classy French Manicure for your hands. If you don't have the time or budget for a salon, no problem. With a little patience and a French Manicure kit that you can buy at any drugstore, you can do your own nails. Pedicures are a little trickier, but you can cover up your feet with closed shoes if need be.

2) Try a workout. Plan ahead for those extra Mother's Day Buffet calories by exercising the day before. You'll have a guilt-free Sunday if you burn those calories in advance on Saturday. Guilt-free translates to stress-free.

3) Soak and relax. Even the busiest Mom can find a few minutes for a relaxing soak in the tub or Jacuzzi. Did you know that immersing yourself in warm water up to your neck is not only a splendid way to relax, but also has health benefits? Researchers at the University of Washington found that when you immerse yourself in warm water, your heart rate drops while at the same time your heart pumps more blood, making your cardiovascular system more efficient.

4) Watch a funny film. Many studies confirm that laughter has numerous health benefits. Laughing encourages certain feel-good hormones to be released into your brain. It's also contagious, so not only do you feel good, but those around you feel better, too. Studies also show laughing can bolster your immune system. So, to feel your best on Sunday, laugh it up on Saturday night with a great comedy.

5) Get your beauty rest. Turning in a little earlier on Saturday night and getting your eight hours of sleep can do wonders for your face - and your attitude - on Sunday. If possible, try to sleep on your back. Sleeping on your stomach can leave you with puffy eyes. Here are two quick remedies for puffy eyes that you can try on Sunday morning to ensure you look fresh for Mother's Day: Dip a soft cloth in cold water, wring it out and gently cover your eyes. When the cloth warms up, dip and wring out again. Repeat for ten minutes. It may seem like an old wives' tale, but cucumbers actually do relieve puffy eyes. Cool it in the fridge, then cut into slices and cover each eye with a cucumber slice.

So, take a little time out on Saturday to try these tips and enjoy your special day on Sunday. Happy Mother's Day!
