A Healthy New Year's Resolution from Georgetown University's Institute for Reproductive Health

(HealthNewsDigest.com).. In addition to the important New Year's resolutions to eat right and exercise more, a woman should also be making a resolution to manage her reproductive health by accurately knowing when she is fertile, according to Victoria Jennings, Ph.D., Director of Georgetown University's Institute for Reproductive Health.

Managing fertility is important for all women between the onset of menses and menopause whether they wish
to achieve or prevent pregnancy. "Managing fertility will help the those 20% of women who are unsuccessful in their attempts to get pregnancy because they do not know on which days they are fertile.

Accurately knowing when they are fertile will let women who do not wish to become pregnant know when to
avoid unprotected sex," Dr. Jennings notes.

Dr. Jennings, an anthropologist who is professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Georgetown University Medical Center, studies health behavior. She has developed CycleBeads to help women manage their fertility. To use CycleBeads a woman simply moves a black rubber ring over a series of color-coded beads that represent her fertile and low fertility days. The day a woman starts her period she puts the rubber ring on CycleBeads' red bead. Each day she moves the ring one bead, always in the direction of the arrow. When the ring is on the red bead or a dark bead, there is very low likelihood of pregnancy, so she can have intercourse on these days without getting pregnant. When the ring is on a glow-in-the-dark white bead - Days 8 through 19 - there is a high likelihood of getting pregnant.
