(HealthNewsDigest.com) - TUCSON, Ariz. – Mitchell H. Sokoloff, MD, FACS, a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of prostate cancer, kidney cancer and testis cancer, has been appointed chief of the Section of Urology and professor of surgery at The University of Arizona Department of Surgery.

Widely respected for developing successful translational and clinical trial research programs, Dr. Sokoloff also has been instrumental in developing innovative potency-preserving (nerve-sparing) and robotic operations for men with prostate cancer and in expanding the role of nephron-sparing surgery and laparoscopy in the management of kidney cancer.

A particular interest of Dr. Sokoloff is combining novel and innovative drug therapies with conventional surgery to improve the outcomes for patients with aggressive and high-risk, locally advanced, and/or metastatic tumors. He has received more than $1 million in peer-reviewed grant support from the U.S. Department of Defense for his research.

“I am a firm believer in the creation and use of multi-disciplinary clinics in which experts from multiple specialties develop the most effective and acceptable treatment plan for each individual patient and his or her family,” Dr. Sokoloff said.

“Dr. Sokoloff’s recruitment represents the UA Department of Surgery’s next step in becoming a resource for innovative, world-class patient care in Southern Arizona. His national standing in urologic oncology will raise the section and the department to an even higher clinical and academic level. It is evident with his achievements that he will serve as an outstanding leader for the Section of Urology,” said Rainer Gruessner, MD, professor and surgery department chairman.

At the UA, Dr. Sokoloff hopes to expand the number and types of clinical trials and to increase the accessibility to multi-modality therapies available for patients with urologic cancers, he said. “Working with the urology faculty, we will increase the visibility and accessibility of state-of-the-art treatments for all types of urologic disease. The objective will be to expand clinical, educational and research programs in laparoscopy, voiding dysfunction and urologic cancers, and to build a pediatric urology program in collaboration with university and community physicians.” Dr. Sokoloff also plans to develop relationships with local and international institutions that provide care to high-risk and underserved populations.

Dr. Sokoloff comes to the UA from Oregon Health and Sciences University, where he served as chief of urologic oncology and director of the OHSU Robotic Surgery Program. Prior to his tenure at OHSU, he served as assistant professor and co-director of urologic oncology at the University of Chicago. At each of these institutions, he was recognized as a superlative patient advocate and counselor and has received multiple commendations for patient care. He also has received acclaim as an educator.

A graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Sokoloff completed residency training at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then completed a prestigious American Foundation for Urologic Disease fellowship in urologic oncology at the University of Virginia. He is a member of numerous professional organizations and societies, including the Board of Directors of the Western Section of the American Urology Association. He has published numerous articles and book chapters and has received awards for both research and patient care. Dr. Sokoloff is a core member of several national cancer intergroups that are focused on creating and evaluating new treatments for urologic cancers.
