1. Skin feels drier when there is less humidity in the air especially in harsh winter conditions , dry winds, mountain air or inside with central heating. Treat your skin to some humidity with a hydrating water mist; your skin will love it. Make your own with distilled water and a few drops of lavender oil or look for Evian water or Thermal Spring water by La Roche Posay. 2. Mild AHA’s are very helpful in moisturizing the skin. They gently lift off the impacted dead skin layer that impairs the skin’s ability to retain moisture. Schedule an in office AHA treatment with your medical aesthetician or use some mild AHA’s at home. REN Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel. 3. Boost your moisture level. Add a hydrating gel or serum that contains hyalauronic acid to your regime. (It is a naturally occurring molecule found in the body which keeps our joints supple.) It attracts moisture and holds it close to the skin. Oily skins – wash skin, use an astringent, apply a few drops of hydrating serum under your sunscreen, if you still need moisture look for lotions that are humectants. Dry skins – use a richer moisturizer with ingredients such as dimethicone, hyalauronic acid and glycerin (they help prevent moisture loss) with extra hydrating serum as needed. 4. Instead of gritty, abrasive scrubs switch to a gentle buffing cream (Caudalie makes one) for weekly exfoliation. Removing dead skin build up will allow your skin to retain moisture and brighten the surface. 5. Get ready for dry skin on the body. Use a loofah sponge twice a week with a mild shower gel and moisturize with a cream or oil while your skin is still damp. If you get keratosis pilaris (rough goose bump like skin on arms and legs) use a lotion like AM Lactin to get rid of the dead skin cells while moisturizing. Hands and feet get a treat with rich moisturizer and overnight gloves. Treat yourself to a really good quality lip balm that heals and moisturizes. Use it often – before you get cracked lips.
