(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Cold weather and winter winds can wreak havoc on your skin. Frequent skin problems associated with brisk winter days and nights is the drying, flaking and reddening of skin. You can counter many of these winter skin irritations by keeping the whole body hydrated – drinking approximately 50 ounces or more of water daily. Then follow these four basic skin care steps:

Cleanse: If you are currently washing your face with soap, consider switching during the winter months to a cream-based facial cleanser. Cleansers often have built in moisturizers, which means that the cleanser won't strip away the natural moisture in your skin.

Exfoliate: Your complexion can get flaky in the winter months, so it is important to gently exfoliate. When you don't properly exfoliate, dead cells build up, stopping your moisturizer from properly doing its job. Exfoliating once or twice a week is enough to keep dead cells at bay.

Moisturize: To keep the skin on your face supple and protected in winter, it is essential to apply moisturizer before going out. In winter you may find the need to use moisturize more frequently. The more oil a moisturizer contains the more effectively it protects against moisture loss. Moisturizers that come in ointment form contain the most oil because an ointment, by definition, consists of 80% oil and 20% water. This water-in-oil emulsion forms a protective layer on the skin and makes it more ‘moisturizing’ than creams and lotions.

Protect: In addition, sun protection is just as important in the winter months as it is the summer. Many people forget to use sunscreen in winter or think it’s not as important, but this is not the case. The sun reflects off snow and ice, and you can actually get double the sun exposure. There may be less UVB rays (burning rays) in winter, but there are still UVA rays (aging rays) to consider. The delicate skin on the face needs protection from these just as much in the winter as in the warm summer months. Added to this is the problem of our ozone layer where, nowadays, there is even more exposure to the sun than in years gone by.

And don’t forget! Cold winter winds and low humidity are also hard on your hair. Use a rich intensive hair treatment to restore moisture to your hair. Dandruff usually gets worse in the winter. Eliminate flaking by using a moisturizing shampoo that also has a soothing effect on your scalp.
