Late summer and early fall are the best times to start getting your skin back in good shape and to keep your skin glowing as the seasons change:
Keep Applying Sunscreen. Just because summer is almost over doesn't mean it's time to ease up on the sunscreen. This has to remain a daily habit. According to Dr. Baxt, make sure it is a broad spectrum lotion to block UVA rays. UVA's are most prevalent in the non-summer months and can be just as damaging.
Don't Forget to Exfoliate. Exfoliating is something many people skip, but now is the time to make it a permanent part of your skincare routine. "If we do not exfoliate, the moisture we add to our skin cannot get deep enough into the skin to thoroughly rehydrate our summer-beaten skin," advises Dr. Baxt. "You've got to rid your skin of the dead cells on the top layer, so whatever product you are using to re-hydrate can penetrate deep enough into the cells to combat the dehydration that has occurred."
Moisturize, Moisturize...Oh, and Moisturize. "After drying out in the sun all summer it is important to put that moisture back in," says Dr. Baxt. "The fall is a great time for your skin to recover and hydrate. Moisturizers should be different for your face and your body and should be used daily in the cooler months."
Repair Sun Damaged Skin. Freckles, sunburn, darker age spots and blotchiness are all common forms of skin damage. Focus on evening out your skin tone and treating these problem areas with spot treatment products. Dr. Baxt says professional grade glycolic acid creams and lotions are the most powerful non-prescription skin care products to get rid of hyper-pigmentation.
Recommended Professional Treatment: PhotofacialTM is a treatment program that dramatically eliminates signs of sun damage, aging, and Rosacea, on the face and neck. It can also be used on the arms and chest. With Photofacial treatments, there is none of the down time associated with lasers and deep peels. Using the Intense Pulsed Light system, Dr. Baxt can dramatically improve the look of sun-damaged skin and patients with persistent redness and flushing of rosacea.
