(HealthNewsDigest.com) - While cosmetic surgery is becoming more accessible and more popular with each year, nonsurgical procedures are soaring in popularity like never before. This is due to an increasing number of dermal fillers and laser skin treatments on the market, as well as lower cost and little to no downtime.

Laser treatments in particular are increasing in popularity as they can treat a variety of skin issues with minimal discomfort and invasiveness. Everything from acne and spider veins to fine lines, sun spots and even sagging skin can now be treated in this way. The following are common lasers used today in the cosmetic industry and what they can treat.

Carbon Dioxide Laser (CO2)

This ablative laser treatment has the most downtime of any laser treatment, but also the most dramatic results. A CO2 laser treatment removes the outer layers of damaged skin to treat deeper facial lines and wrinkles, as well as acne scars and sun damage.

Erbium Laser

This treatment option is lighter than the CO2 laser, although it is still an ablative treatment. It can treat fine lines and small to moderate wrinkles, as well as sun damage, scars and pigmentation issues. Less surrounding tissue is burned during treatment, so the downtime is reduced.

Fractional Laser Treatments

Fractional laser resurfacing treats microscopic columns of skin while leaving healthy surrounding tissue unaffected. This treatment option produces noticeable results with greatly reduced downtime. Fractional lasers spare parts of the epidermis to create changes in the deeper dermis, and this laser can be an Erbium or CO2 laser. Fractional means that rather than creating a solid beam, the laser will create a grid pattern to create small holes in the skin. Ablative lasers, on the other hand, mean that tissue is destroyed.

Radiofrequency Treatments

This popular non-laser treatment uses radiofrequency to tighten the skin. It works by heating the deeper dermis skin, which tightens stored collagen. It also boosts the body's natural production of collagen, which gives support to the skin. It can improve skin texture as well as reduce wrinkles, jowls, crow's feet and forehead creases.

Infrared Treatments

Infrared is another non-laser treatment that offers minimal downtime to stimulate the body's production of collagen while tightening the skin. Infrared skin tightening directs light and heat to the dermis to stimulate elastin and collagen for visible tightening.

Ultrasound Skin Tightening

Along with lasers, radiofrequency and infrared energy, ultrasound energy may also be used to safely lift and tighten skin without surgery. Ultherapy is the most well-known ultrasound skin treatment and it lifts skin on the neck, eyebrows and under the chin by stimulating the body's production of collagen through focused ultrasound energy. Unlike radiofrequency and lasers, ultrasound energy will bypass the surface of the skin to reach the right depth and temperature.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a unique new treatment that reduces fat deposits without incisions. This treatment uses the process of cryolipolysis to cool and destroy fat cells, while leaving surrounding tissue unaffected. This cold temperature effectively kills fat cells, which are then eliminated by the body over weeks.
