(HealthNewsDigest.com) - This year marks the 10th anniversary of Falls Prevention Awareness Day (FPAD) on September 22nd This day was established to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs. In 2014 alone, older Americans experienced 29 million falls causing seven million injuries and costing an estimated $31 billion in annual Medicare costs.

With more than 10,000 older Americans turning 65 each day, the number of fall-related injuries and deaths is expected to surge. The financial toll for older adult falls will increase as the population ages and it may reach $67.7 billion by 2020.

Russell J. Kendzior is an internationally recognized slip, trip, and fall expert. Kendzior is experienced in the production of slip-and-fall prevention products including slip-resistant footwear, floor coverings, coatings, finishes and cleaning agents. He is a leading researcher, educator and expert consultant to the manufacturing, insurance, and safety industries.

To coincide with FPAD and as the more dangerous weather seasons approach, Kendzior would like to offer seniors, their families and care-givers some practical and life-saving advice which includes:

  • Six steps to preventing typical elderly fall injuries & the contributing factors
  • Flooring, cleaners & footwear – what’s recommended & what to avoid
  • Specific advice for bathroom safety
  • What you need to know regarding insurance coverage & your legal rights
  • Recommended standards, codes and guidelines for nursing homes

Please let me know if you’d like to speak with Kendzior or receive a review copy of Kendzior’s upcoming book, Floored! Real-Life Stories from a Slip and Fall Expert Witness (Rowman & Littlefield, September 2017). It examines a small fraction of the cases he has worked on during the past 20 years as an expert witness and is a great resource which explains what can be done to prevent slip, trip and fall injuries and thus avoid potential lawsuits and the costs involved for everyone – monetary, physical and emotional.
