(HealthNewsDigest.com) - U.S. highway safety regulators opened a formal investigation of brake problems in the 2010 Toyota Prius hybrid. Earlier Thursday, Toyota said it had discovered and fixed software problems with early versions of Prius, and that it is investigating the brakes in all of its gas-electric hybrid models.

Toyota also said two massive recalls over some models' acceleration problems -- a separate issue from the Prius troubles -- will cost around $1.1 billion. It detailed those costs as it reported a net profit of $1.68 billion for the three months ended Dec. 31, the period before the recall. Earlier this week, Toyota said its January U.S. sales fell 16% from a year ago, as the recall and a sales halt took its toll.
