National media has recently turned its attention to chimney sweeps who do not provide a thorough inspection of a home’s chimneys before recommending repairs or service. “Taking the time to research the companies you plan to welcome into your home before you hire is one of the best ways to avoid working with disreputable sweeps,” says Jay Walker, president of the NCSG. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, on average there are 26,900 chimney fires each year resulting in over $128 million in property loss. NCSG reminds homeowners that an annual inspection by a qualified professional is one of the best methods for reducing that risk. Homeowners are encouraged to hire professional chimney sweeps with a verifiable guild membership, proper credentials and insurance.
