Homeowners should verify membership, credentials and insurance before hiring

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - INDIANAPOLIS - This home heating season, the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) reminds homeowners that hiring a reputable chimney sweep is almost as important as the service provided.

National media has recently turned its attention to chimney sweeps who do not provide a thorough inspection of a home’s chimneys before recommending repairs or service.

“Taking the time to research the companies you plan to welcome into your home before you hire is one of the best ways to avoid working with disreputable sweeps,” says Jay Walker, president of the NCSG.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, on average there are 26,900 chimney fires each year resulting in over $128 million in property loss.

NCSG reminds homeowners that an annual inspection by a qualified professional is one of the best methods for reducing that risk.

Homeowners are encouraged to hire professional chimney sweeps with a verifiable guild membership, proper credentials and insurance. NCSG members have access to the latest training and equipment used in the industry and have agreed to abide by a formal Code of Ethics.

“There are relatively few government mandated regulations on service businesses in our industry,” says Mark McSweeney, NCSG executive director. “As a result, taking the time to find an ethical and educated professional is important when having regular chimney maintenance performed on your home’s chimney and venting system.”

Homeowners may locate an NCSG member company by visiting www.ncsg.org.

More than 900 chimney service companies nationwide are NCSG members.
