Harvard's Sexuality in Midlife and Beyond Special Health Report

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - BOSTON—Contrary to what some people may assume, sex therapy doesn’t involve being physically intimate in front of a therapist. But what really happens during sex therapy sessions? Sexuality in Midlife and Beyond, a newly updated Special Health Report from Harvard Medical School, explains what to expect from sex therapy. Physical changes that begin around middle age can affect a person's ability and desire to have sex. Erectile dysfunction, vaginal dryness from menopausal changes, or a flagging sex drive (libido) are common problems. But emotional factors also play a major role in a satisfying sex life.

Sex therapy is similar to couples therapy, but with an emphasis on learning to talk about sexual feelings more comfortably. The goal is to help people explore the nature and possible causes of their sexual concerns, better communicate their sexual needs and preferences, and expand their repertoire of sensual and sexual activities.

Couples typically meet with a therapist for weekly 50-minute sessions. The therapist may serve as a sex educator, to help couples understand the physiological basis of specific problems. This can go a long way toward relieving anxiety in both partners. The therapist may also recommend exercises, books, and DVDs. But most of the behavioral and relationship-building work is actually done at home, as the couple puts into practice what they've been learning.
