According to Elliot W. Jacobs, MD, FACS, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Manhattan, among today’s treatment options are fat injections which require an operation to harvest the fat from another portion of the patient’s body (typically from the abdomen or buttock areas), cleanse and inject the fat. Usually done under local anesthesia, often more than one operation is required for optimal results. There is some bruising and swelling for a week or more after the procedure. Once done, however, results are long lasting and there is no risk of tissue rejection. Another increasingly popular and easier option is the use of Sculptra, a poly-l-lactic acid solution that was FDA approved in 2004. Injected just below the skin, it gradually plumps and thickens the skin and increases hand fullness thereby reducing the visible appearance of veins, bones, and tendons. The Sculptra injections are minimally painful (xylocaine – a local anesthetic - is mixed in with the injection) and stimulate the body to produce its own natural collagen. Usually two treatments are required approximately 4-6 weeks apart. There is minimal discomfort, bruising and swelling. “Results last up to 18-24 months but touch-up injections to maintain correction can be done on an annual basis,” said Dr Jacobs. To maximize the appearance of a youthful looking hand, additional treatments are performed at the same time to remove minor skin discolorations, commonly referred to as “brown spots.” These signs of aging and sun damage can be treated with lasers, peels or with skin bleaching creams. Dr. Jacobs also recommends daily applications of Retin-A and the frequent use of skin moisturizers to improve the general texture of the skin. “In this age of cosmetic enhancement, there are now relatively easy, non-surgical methods to complete the rejuvenation picture and provide women with youthful looking hands that match their true spirits and physical appearance,” said Dr. Jacobs.
