( - Football season is in full swing and baseball has reached a fever pitch with the World Series beginning today. In high intensity sports, a ball to the face is almost inevitable. The nose is particularly vulnerable, and can leave athletes with impaired breaking and permanent physical scars if not treated delicately.

What happens when the nose takes a hit?

“The way we approach a broken nose repair is different than how we handle a traditional rhinoplasty,” shares New York City facial plastic surgeon and rhinoplasty expert Dr. Sam Rizk, MD, FACS. “With a nasal injury or break in the nose, it can affect not only shape but also function, and it can cause a fractured or deviated septum.”

Some common sports-induced nasal injuries include:

  • Fracture and deviation in nasal bones resulting in a crooked nose
  • Cartilage collapses, which may affect breathing
  • Cuts in the nose and damage to soft tissue and skin resulting in scar tissue

The good news is that these issues are reparable with nose surgery both to restore better appearance and better breathing.

Dr. Rizk has tremendous experience evaluating and treating broken noses, including those that occur from a sports injury. He is known for his pioneering work with 3D High Definition technology, which allows for a more precise surgery with drastically reduced scarring and recovery time with a highly natural-looking result.
