(HealthNewsDigest.com) - The mommy makeover is a term for a series of surgical procedures that essentially "makes over" a woman's body, addressing problem areas with procedures like liposuction, breast lift, breast augmentation, and tummy tuck. The mommy makeover is designed for women who have had children and now want to have their bodies restored to its pre-pregnancy state.

Why Consider A Mommy Makeover?

Most women are able to make a healthy recovery after childbirth, but they may have excess weight and skin on some areas of their body that may not easily be addressed with diet and exercise. Some of this may also be a result of aging, breast feeding, genetic predispositions and other factors. While exercise and proper nutrition can go a long way toward creating a beautiful body, some women find that they are unable to achieve the results they anticipated through those efforts.  During pregnancy, the stomach muscles often expand and separate to accommodate the growing fetus, and unfortunately no amount of sit-ups and crunches can fix this. But surgery can.  The mommy makeover is designed to give women a jumpstart and do what diet and exercise could not achieve.

What Does the Mommy Makeover Entail?

The mommy makeover typically consists of a breast augmentation and/or breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction. A breast lift can be done to lift the breasts and remove excess skin to make them appear more youthful and supple in appearance. Some women may opt to receive a breast augmentation instead of or along with the procedure to enlarge the breasts with implants and restore fullness.  A tummy tuck is also known as an abdominoplasty procedure, which essentially removes fatty tissue and excess skin from the abdominal region while making the abdominal wall stronger, tighter, and more firm. All of these procedures can be done over a course of several months or they can be performed at the same time. Finally, liposuction is a procedure that removes excess fat from various parts of the body including the upper arms, torso, buttocks, and thighs. Liposuction is able to remove stubborn fat from targeted areas that have not responded to diet and exercise in order to create a more shapely figure.

The Popularity of the Mommy Makeover

The mommy makeover has increased in popularity in recent years, perhaps due in part to the media's obsession with celebrity pregnancies and celebrity babies.  Celebrities often are under pressure to get back in shape quickly after childbirth and they often appear to do so with relative ease.  As a result, other women may desire to do the same. In fact, many women today not only feel a certain amount of pressure to bounce back more quickly, but they experience an overall need to look and feel good about themselves after giving birth.
