(HealthNewsDigest.com) - For a number of years, people who suffered from sagging, or drooping eyelids as a result of age, and other factors, had no way of rejuvenating and improving their appearance. Fortunately however, because of expert surgeons and the innovative development of blepharoplasty procedures, that has changed. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids to tighten muscles, remove excess fat and provide a more youthful appearance.

In addition to making you look older, and often more worn out, puffy and drooping eyelids can actually impair your vision, which is one of the reasons why so many people now seek out blepharoplasty to improve their quality of life. Though blepharoplasty is performed as a single treatment, some patients decide to undergo other treatments, such as brow lifts, or face lift procedures in order to achieve enhanced results.

Dr. Peter Hilger is a professional surgeon, and the director of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at his practice in Minnesota. With experts such as Dr. Hilger, it is possible for patients to access the appearance that they have always wanted with as little stress and downtime as possible.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Referred to more regularly as "eyelid surgery", blepharoplasty is a type of medical procedure that is often used to repair and rejuvenate droopy eyelids by removing excess fat, skin and muscle. Patients who undergo blepharoplasty treatments can be awake throughout the procedure, though many will be given medication to numb the pain around the eyes and relieve anxiety. It is extremely rare for any patient undergoing blepharoplasty to require an overnight stay at hospital, and most treatments will be performed on an outpatient basis.

Though blepharoplasty is most regularly used for cosmetic reasons, it can also be performed as a medical procedure, for those who suffer from problems where excess skin on the upper eyelid is leading to a loss in peripheral vision.

The Best Candidates for Blepharoplasty

As with any type of cosmetic surgery, it is essential for patients seeking eyelid surgery to be in great physical health, as well as have realistic expectations regarding their results. Factors that are typically considered in deciding a person's candidacy include skin type, age, ethnic background, and the degree to which vision may be obscured.

Patients must also be willing to commit themselves to following all post-operative instructions regarding surgery, which could include cleaning the eye on a daily basis for five days until stitches are removed. Certain physical activities and environments should generally be avoided in the weeks following blepharoplasty surgery.

The Benefits

Undergoing blepharoplasty surgery can benefit patients in a number of ways, by removing the excess fat and skin around the eyes and reveal a more youthful appearance. Generally, because the procedure is so short, lasting anywhere between one and three hours, depending on the extent of the work, patients will be put under anesthetic and never go completely under.

Most people regard blepharoplasty as a simple and quick way to improve the appearance of the eyes, and many who undergo the procedure say that it changes the way they feel about themselves in terms of confidence and self-esteem. What's more, for those who engage in surgery due to medical concerns, eyelid lifts can improve their vision significantly.
