(HealthNewsDigest.com) - The facelift procedure is popular among patients with visible aging signs like loose, sagging skin and wrinkles. During this surgery, excess skin and fat are removed from the face, the underlying muscles are tightened, and the remaining skin is gently lifted and repositioned to achieve the desired, youthful look. Facial plastics surgeon Dr. Stephen Smith specializes in facelift in Columbus, Ohio. He finds that many patients come in for consultation unaware of the fact that the traditional facelift is intended to treat the lower portion of the face and neck, leaving other areas like the eyes and brow unaffected.

Fortunately, facial surgery can be tailored to suit each individual's needs. Aside from the changes made to the skin of the face and the underlying tissues with facelift, patients may also benefit from the addition of other procedures performed while they are anesthetized. Many areas of the face are affected through the aging process.

Brow

Beginning with the forehead, a person may experience creases and drooping eyebrows. A forehead lift, also known as a brow lift, can smooth existing lines and raise the eyebrows to a higher position, creating a more youthful and prominent arch.

Eyes

Working our way down the face, the next feature is the eyes. Excess skin and fat can created the look of wrinkled or sagging eyelids and bags under the eyes. With an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), the eyes become less hooded through the removal of accumulated skin and fat. If the eyes have taken on a sunken, hollow look, an autologous fat transfer may add volume to the under-eye area.

Cheeks

Below the eyes, aging cheeks can benefit from a cheek implant procedure, which restores the natural fullness of this area of the face and creates higher, more prominent cheekbones. As we get older, our faces tend to lose the contour that many of us find attractive, and helps to define our unique look. Facial filers may also help to improve the cheek area.

Lips

Further down the face, thinning or wrinkled lips can be plumped with a number of options, including injectable fillers or one's own harvested fat. Lip implants are also available for more permanent and dramatic results.

Chin

Next, one's chin can be enhanced to look more pronounced through a chin implant. This surgery is most beneficial to a patient's side profile. The implant helps to create balance between the nose and chin for improved facial harmony.

Neck

Enhancements to the chin are complemented by procedures to the neck, such as a necklift. During this procedure, the muscles may be tightened, liposuction can remove extra fat from the area, and unwanted skin is trimmed.

Each of the procedures listed above can be performed through a number of techniques. Additionally, because each patient has different needs, it is possible to choose which procedures will be performed alongside or as part of the facelift surgery. The combination of procedures often helps to ensure optimal results.

Dr. Stephen P. Smith is a board certified facial plastic surgeon specializing in facial rejuvenation procedures like the facelift in Columbus, Ohio. He can be reached at (614) 366-7927 or online at http://www.smithfacialplastics.com/.
