...Adventist Medical Center Offers New Treatment Option

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 13, 2012 -- For many people suffering from chronic knee pain, a total replacement was once the only option. Today that's no longer the case. Adventist Medical Center (AMC), is the first hospital in East Portland to offer a minimally invasive procedure for those suffering with osteoarthritis of the knee. MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing is a minimally invasive procedure performed using a surgeon-controlled robotic arm system.

The robotic assisted procedure offers more accurate resurfacing of the diseased portion of the knee, saving as much of the original knee as possible. "In many cases, patients who have experienced the MAKOplasty option are permitted to walk soon after surgery, drive a car within two weeks and return to normal daily activities shortly thereafter," states Orthopaedic surgeon Todd Ulmer, MD who treats and admits patients to AMC.

The use of this highly advanced robotic arm technology can:

-- Enable surgeons to accurately resurface the arthritic portion of the
knee and preserve healthy tissue and bone
-- Facilitate optimal implant positioning to result in a more natural
feeling knee following surgery
-- Result in a more rapid recovery and shorter hospital stay when compared
to traditional total knee replacement surgery
-- Promote a rapid relief from pain and return to daily activities
Like other knee arthroplasty procedures, MAKOplasty is typically covered by most Medicare-approved and private health insurance providers. Learn more about this option by registering for the free LivingWell Expo and Seminar on September 24 at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required by calling 503-256-4000.
