(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Just like the first time you experimented with a drug, drug abuse recovery is something you have never done before. So when you go through the transition of no longer abusing drugs, it is a walk that you have never done before. This is why having an addiction isn't a feeling- It is an actual disease that requires work, patience, time, and determination to eliminate; just like any other disease. It has nothing to do with your ability to say ‘no' or not having the willpower. You can't say no to a disease. You have to go through a process to get rid of it.

An addiction is a disease, but it is not something that you can simply cure with an over-the-counter prescription. It involves inheriting a new lifestyle, where you learn to manage the addiction and eliminate the cravings. In order for this process of recovery to be a success, the very first step should be locating someone that is a professional at dealing with addictions and having an understanding that it is an actual disease. Through the recommendations of certified professionals, along with utilizing the latest in advanced therapy, you have a great chance of successfully recovering and working towards a bright future.

Here are some beneficial ways of becoming another successful story of defeating the ugly disease of addiction:

Recovery is priority. First, make sure everything is about you and your well-being. The start of every day is about you, along with maintaining constant communication with the certified professionals that are trained and equipped to deal with these types of situations. Contact them about everything, instead of attempting to fight alone. Many adopt the principles of a 12 Step Program, as it has proven to be successful for millions of people worldwide.

Prepare for a journey. This isn't a 30-day plan. Don't think the temptation and desire leaves, because you want it to. It leaves because you are going to make it leave. You are going to be determined and focused to get rid of this setback. You are human, so you will have temporary thoughts pass your mind, but it is up to you with what you do with it. Being able to overlook doubt and passive thoughts are what creates perseverance. Create new ways and techniques that help you to overcome unwanted feelings and thoughts.

Communication is invaluable. Whenever we have to go through a process, there are certain situations that only we understand and go about alone. Whenever this happens, it is necessary to have someone that you can talk to. They don't have to walk along the path. They can just be the one that helps you clear your mind. Something as simple as a general conversation can be therapeutic to you, mentally as you work towards renewing yourself. Having someone there to share a few laughs with you is priceless.

Take advantage of your free time. One of the biggest issues is allowing your mind to have too much time to wonder and think and think and think. One of the biggest battles in life is ourselves. You can have all of the right intentions, yet be in a bad situation. When you have too much time on your hands, you allow yourself time to bring back the good and the bad that you have experienced. And, this is a sure way to deplete your motivation to change. Instead, find something to do. It doesn't always have to be taking on a job or something that will cost you out of pocket. You can actually do positive things that cost you nothing, but your time. Something as small as volunteering and helping someone less fortunate can help you to win on so many levels. Along with helping someone in need, you are utilizing your time, and actually feeling great about what you did.

Establishing a new environment. One of the biggest struggles is going out to change your lifestyle, yet coming back to the negative influence that kept you down in the beginning. Some situations involve changing your phone number and the people you may deal with on social media, while others may involve moving out of your current home and staying with someone for a short period of time. Every scenario is different, but it is important to do what is necessary to improve yourself. The very first step is focusing on you, so you must do what is necessary.

Don't Quit. This is the last, yet most important step. It is even more important than making yourself priority, because what is the point of making yourself the priority and then quitting? It defeats the purpose. So before you set out on this much needed journey, come to an agreement with yourself. Look over everything that you have in front of you and realize that there is so much more to gain, the further you move ahead. Agree to never quit and the other steps will be nothing but success!
