(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Michael Jordan made it cool for black men and Bruce Willis paved the way for white guys to be bald and bold.  When it comes to style, hair is not only the main thing on your head, but also the main thing on your mind, especially when your hair begins to disappear. A little knowledge is power. We asked Ian Watson, founder and CEO of His Hair Clinic to give men a few tips on what they should know about being boldly bald.

Shaving hair does not make it grow back stronger. If only it were that easy. Unfortunately, a shaved head will not prevent a bald head. Male pattern baldness is caused by a miniaturization of the hair follicle itself. Shaving one's head doesn't increase the number of healthy hair present on the scalp and will not cause the hair to thicken.

Tattoos as a remedy for baldness

Introducing HIS Hair Clinic's Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP®)

Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP®) is a specialized hair loss treatment that simulates the natural look of cropped hair (replicates real shaven hair follicles on the scalp), and effectively camouflages and strengthens thinning hair and pattern baldness, and even alopecia and hair transplant scars.  SMP was developed as both a cosmetic procedure for men suffering with all types of hair loss, and as a medical procedure to help conceal scars, burns and birthmarks, as well as the full spectrum of alopecia strains.

During a SMP® procedure, a blend of specialist pigments are deposited into the dermal layer of the skin on the scalp. Using a highly sophisticated combination of angles, penetration depths, deposit sizes and pigment shades, these deposits create an extremely realistic illusion of real shaven hair on the scalp.

Don't cover up balding hair

If you're contemplating artificial means of hiding, enhancing or covering your baldness, you may want to think twice about it. You'll pay in more ways than one. Hair plugs, where hair is harvested from the side and back of your head and transplanted to the top, are expensive, painful and can permanently scar. Toupees and hairpieces aren't cheap either, and they're high maintenance. Plus, do you really want a girl running her hands through your "hair," only to discover it isn't your hair?

Maintaining It

Maintaining a neat and clean-shaven head isn't hard - it just requires the proper balance.  Remember that shaving this area means intense exfoliation for skin that normally doesn't get much, so take your time and use the right treatments afterward.  Follow these tips to show off that neat noggin:

  • Moisturize immediately after shaving with something oil-free and lightweight.
  • Wipe away excessive oil later on, preferably with something that is not your shirt sleeve.
  • Protect that head from direct sun by applying a high-quality sunblock if outside for more than a few minutes.

How to shave your head

In order to ensure a smooth shave and prevent "self-inflicted wounds," keep your scalp muscles relaxed and your skin well-moisturized throughout the shaving process.

Your best bet is to shave in the shower because the feeling of water massaging your head will help relax your scalp muscles, open your pores and follicles, and soften the hair for a smooth shearing by the razor blade.

Hats and Hair Pieces

Tight fitting hats and wigs can create what is known as traction alopecia or friction alopecia. Even if the majority of your scalp has healthy hair, this condition has been reported to cause further damage and create new bald spots. Wearing these items for long period at a time can also lead to friction alopecia because the items are constantly rubbing against the scalp. While these issues are typically not permanent, they can become chronic.

Style with care

If your hairline is receding at the temples, work with it by parting the hair down the middle of one of the receding areas. That tends to be OK if your hair is not too thin as well. If it is, it may be better not to style the hair up, but to go for something quite short that sits forward on the forehead.

Dark Colors

You can look much better in dark colors than men will full heads of hair. The contrast of dark clothes will be your shiny, bald head that will look great and this fashion tip should be embraced by all bald men.

Collared Shirts

An important fashion tip for bald men is to avoid wearing V-neck or round neck tee shirts. Always opt for shirts with collars. The look will be completed with a big knotted tie.
