(HealthNewsDigest.com) - AAA estimates that Americans have saved $18 billion on gas so far this year compared to the same period in 2015.  During the first three months of 2016, Americans paid the cheapest quarterly gas prices in 11 years.  Although gas prices are currently at their highest level of the year averaging $2.27 a gallon, fuel price averages are 47 cents a gallon lower than last year, and $1.39 a gallon lower compared to the 2014 Memorial holiday period.  AAA expects most U.S. drivers will pay the lowest Memorial Day gas prices since 2005.  According to a recent AAA survey, 55 percent of Americans say they are more likely to take a road trip this year due to lower gas prices.  In Nebraska, fuel prices have increased 17 cents a gallon during the past month to $2.25 a gallon.  Oil field fires in Alberta, Canada, have impacted refinery operations in the Great Lake regions causing regional price spikes.  An increase in demand for fuel is putting upward pressure on wholesale prices, as well.  The Energy Information Administration reports that fuel demand in the U.S. is up 4.4 percent compared to last year.  For the latest fuel price information on all 50 states, visit www.fuelgaugereport.com.  This AAA website features useful tools for long-distance travelers including a fuel cost calculator tool and a color-coded U.S. map identifying the states with the highest and lowest fuel price averages.
