Feb. 24-28 Conference Showcases Newest Healthcare IT Products, Real-World Solutions
Just how information technology can address these emerging trends and issues will be highlighted at the 2008 Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference & Exhibition, the largest I.T. conference in the United States. The meeting will have almost 900 exhibiting companies – from Fortune 500 to start-ups – showcasing their latest innovations and new product launches over one million square feet. And it offers IT professionals the opportunity to attend more than 300 education sessions and connect with industry leaders, policy makers, vendors and their peers. Among the news opportunities at this year’s Conference: Keynote speakers Bill Frist, MD, U.S. Senator from Tennessee (1995-2007), was the 23rd U.S. Senate majority leader. As a senator, he emerged as one of the country’s leading voices on health issues, with healthcare IT as one of his top 5 healthcare initiatives. Dr. Frist leads a Save the Children Drive to make the preventable deaths of millions of children in the developing world an issue for Americans. His opening speech is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25 at 8 a.m. Michael O. Leavitt, Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, leads the nation’s efforts to protect the health of all Americans and provide essential human services to those in need. He is intensively focused on engaging Americans as healthcare consumers by making healthcare more transparent in quality and price, while fulfilling the federal government’s responsibilities to public health requirements. At HHS, Secretary Leavitt manages one of the largest civilian departments in the federal government with a budget that accounts for almost one out of every four federal dollars and more than 67,000 employees. His speech is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 8:30 a.m. Robert Kolodner, MD, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology for the Department of Health and Human Services, serves as principal advisor to Secretary Leavitt on all health IT initiatives. Named to his post in April 2007, he is responsible for developing and directing the implementation of the strategic plan to guide nationwide adoption of interoperable health IT to reduce medical errors, improve quality and produce greater value in healthcare. His speech will immediately follow Michael Leavitt’s. Steve Case, Chairman and CEO of Revolution Health, launched the company in 2005 to put consumers at the center of the healthcare system. Prior to founding Revolution Health, he was Chairman and CEO of America Online Inc. and, later, Chairman of Time Warner. As the co-founder of AOL, he played an integral role in building the world’s largest Internet company, and helped transform how people communicate, learn and conduct business. His speech is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google Inc., joined Google from Novell, where he led that company’s strategic planning, management and technology development. Since joining Google, he has focused on building the corporate infrastructure needed to maintain Google’s rapid growth and on ensuring that quality remains high while product development cycle times are kept at a minimum. His speech is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28, at 8:30 a.m. Steven D. Levitt, PhD, is the Alvin Baum Professor of Economics and Director of the Becker Center on Chicago Price Theory at the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business. He also is the bestselling author of Freakonomics. His speech is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. Education sessions Technological Solutions to Workflow Inefficiencies on Medical/Surgical Units. Work environment issues continue to create formidable recruitment and retention challenges. The demands on nurses have increased, yet work-saving technologies have not been implemented at many facilities. Pamela F. Cipriano, PhD, RN, FAAN, Chief Clinical Office and Chief Nursing Officer at the University of Virginia Medical Center, will review the TD2 (Technology Drive Down) process, findings and recommendations. This session is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. Embracing the Patient-Centric Electronic Health Record—Challenges Conquered and Benefits Reaped. S. Ward Cassells, MD, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the U.S. Department of Defense, will address key initiatives in his new role at Military Health Services and examine the challenges and benefits of utilizing EHRs. This session is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25 at 11:15 a.m. The Retail Health Phenomena: Creating Access to Convenient, Affordable Healthcare. The growth of retail clinics nationwide have become an important part of the healthcare industry. Michael C. Howe, CEO of MinuteClinic, will answer the key questions surrounding the retail clinic model, including the history of this new delivery model and its national expansion. This session is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25 at 12:30 p.m. A Primer on e-Discovery for Healthcare Organizations. This session will include an overview of key issues with respect to electronic data management, examples of what not to do when handling electronically stored information and more. This primer on knowledge management counseling and product management will be presented by Paul Weiner, Esq., National e-Discovery Counsel, Littler Mendelson, PC. This presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 9:45 a.m. The Exhibition To showcase the latest in the field, almost 900 exhibiting companies will display new products and hold demonstrations. The Interoperability Showcase allows attendees to track their EHRs at this interactive exhibit featuring the latest technology and standards in EHR products. Attendees will be able to create and manage their own virtual health records and access it across multiple healthcare settings within the Showcase, which will be structured as a fully functioning HIMSS Regional Health Information Infrastructure Organization (RHIO).
