The Power of Food!

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - When I first coined the phrase, “The Power of Food”, I was referring to food’s potential benefit for our health. Now as I think about the power of food, I am referring to much more. I myself originally began eating healthier foods little by little to give myself energy for my early day. But little did I know that I would slowly and permanently build a repertoire of foods, which would help me to lose weight, fuel my workouts and prevent disease.

I have learned throughout the years of personal dieting and counseling clients, that so many of us focus on what not to eat so we can lose weight. But I suggest that we put more focus on the power of food and what it gives us, including weight loss as a wonderful side benefit. Let's put more focus on what foods to eat, how to prepare them creatively and healthily, how to change our taste preferences (low fat, or non processed for instance) and when to eat them to feel our best. Putting our focus on these aspects of food then helps us to be healthy while we lose too! Food does hold power, the power to energize us, heal us, and give us pleasure. I like to suggest that if we put on focus more on the positives of change, we can view making changes when necessary as a challenge instead of a chore.

For Instance

Food is Fuel. How often did we choose foods for our meals and snacks to enhance our energy? How we function physically and mentally (food affects our mood) can be greatly affected by our choices. High junk sugar foods and drinks such as soda, play havoc with our energy and mood versus the healthier choices we know we should take the time to make. If we haven't, we can now and let's start with breakfast (High fiber cereal everyone instead of the common egg on a roll?).

Food Really is Nature's Drugs. Have we focused on the disease fighting aspect of food in the past year when we chose foods? Mother Nature's arsenal of drugs (yes I said drugs!) are found in fruits, vegetables and grains, known as vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. We also reap many benefits from certain fats, the Omega's (yes, the good fats!).Did we try to eat more of these foods for our health more often (Did we focus on eating these foods for health, and disease prevention versus our weight?)? If not, we can now.

Food Feeds Our Brain. Food feeds our brain along with the rest of our body. Brain nutrition according to experts has a few basic aspects, each corresponding to the macronutrients of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. So, once again we might want to consider that each of these nutrients is important to our body and reconsider diets that eliminate or drastically reduce any one type of food (okay, I couldn't resist since so many of us are carb starved these days!). All of our nutrients provide our brain with the raw materials to protect, power and keep it functioning at its best. And since our brain controls every part of our body, let's nourish it to be healthy, to feel, and to look good.

Next week, I will list and describe my favorite Top Ten Foods or so, that really do help us to fight disease based upon research, and that can help us to lose while giving us more energy too. And I think you will agree, when we have more energy, we also feel in a better mood; I know that I can work out more intensely, and of course this reinforces my ability to maintain my desired weight. The fact that I can get stronger, become more toned, and lose weight, along with achieving anti-aging benefits has lead me to believe in what the power of food can do for us. In some ways I think that I was able to change my eating habits easier because I made this food-body connection. I am referring to the connection I made between the foods that I ate and how I felt physically and mentally within an hour, throughout the day and during the next day’s exercise session.

So, this week let's consider the Power of Food, how powerful it really is, and next week we'll discuss the top foods to eat more often (instead of what not to eat)!
