Eat Often - For Better Work Outs

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - "Eat Often", a tool of my program, serves many purposes. One major purpose that it serves is that it can help us to lose weight, feel better, and be healthier too. What do I mean by eating often? And why should we?

To "Eat Often", is to start our day by eating some form of breakfast within an hour of getting up, and continuing to eat every 3-4 hours. This "way of eating" includes eating meals, mini-meals and snacks. All types of foods can be eaten at any time of the day, so if you happen to love breakfast foods, enjoy them at any time of the day whether it's for a mini-meal, snack or even a meal such as dinner. The idea is for us to eat, and to not skip eating!

Does this sound crazy as a weight loss plan? Does it sound easy (eating often may sound really easy, right?)? It may sound crazy and easy, but often it isn't. Changing our eating habits may not be easy as we think, and it requires a plan and persistence on our part. So, before we continue, let's look a little closer to see why we can lose weight, feel better and be healthier, by eating often.

Eating Often will
Keep our blood sugar levels in an optimal range. This can help reduce those sugar cravings (afternoon candy anyone?). I have a saying, we can't play catch-up, once we're hungry. It's our brain and the hormones set in motion, which give us the cravings.

Supply our brain readily available fuel. Not only will this reduce the sugar cravings I mention above, but it will help us to maintain an even mood, with a higher level of thinking ability. Ever feed your fatigue, or low mood?

Help us to burn a few more calories. Every time we eat, we raise our metabolic rate a bit. This is called the "thermogenic effect of food". Sort of like adding a little bit more wood to a fire and seeing the sparks. Eat the same amount of calories, but spread them out, and burn more!

Give us more physical energy. When we have more energy because our blood sugar levels are not rising and crashing like a roller coaster, we can have a better workout (more intensity means more calories burned), better mood and let's remember, more energy doesn't enhance the couch -potato weight -gaining syndrome.

Help us to reduce our portions. Ever go a long time without eating and not want to eat the kitchen sink (If it's my kitchen sink salad, it's okay!)? We can shrink our stomach (stomachs do shrink) and this can help us to reduce portions when we eat more often.

Help us to reduce starvation eating. Ever eat all the bread in the bread basket when you arrive at the restaurant? Ever eat the meal as you are preparing the meal? Ever eat what ever is convenient? Being really hungry isn't a good thing for us weight watchers.

Aid immune health and reduce stress. When we go long periods without eating, our body releases more stress hormones, which isn't good for our immune system, and cardiovascular health just to name two very important body systems! (P.S. Stress hormones also contribute to hardening of the arteries, so eat more often!).

Do any of these sound important? It may take time to change our eating patterns, and we may we come up with reasons not to, even if we decide to do so. But that might be just our resistance to change. While it may also take us time to organize ourselves; meaning, what to eat and when, changing lifestyle habits require effort, but isn't a slim waistline and feeling better, worth it? I think so, and I hope you do too.
