(HealthNewsDigest.com) - As the weather gets chilly and the air gets dry and cold, many of us are sniffling our days away. Due to the lack of humidity in the air and the frigid wind, nasal membranes can dry up and become painful and inflamed.

Luckily, you can easily clean out your sinuses, and you don't have to go the doctor or load up on sinus medications from CVS. Instead, you need look no further than the Neti Pot, an old-fashioned method of irrigating the sinuses and flushing out potential bacteria.

Dr. Jordan Pritikin, a board-certified otolaryngologist at The Chicago Nasal & Sinus Center explains, "There are small pools located at the base of our sinuses (near our cheekbones). When our sinuses are clogged or otherwise congested, mucus can get trapped in these pools and remain there indefinitely. This can lead to the growth of bacteria, which in turn can lead to an increased risk of sinus infection."

Dr. Pritikin suggests the Neti Pot as a simple way to help flush out the sinuses and wash away clogged up mucus. To use the Neti Pot, just fill the base with distilled water and salt, and then tilt your head over the sink at a 45-degree angle. Put the spout into one nostril and pour the solution into it, allowing it to drip out of the other nostril. Repeat on the opposite side when you are finished. For optimum benefits, use the Neti Pot three times a week. "In certain cases using a sinus irrigator can prevent sinus infections or flush the harmful bacteria away before an infection becomes full-blown. Sometimes the simple, low-technology remedies are the most effective," continues Dr. Pritikin.

Dr. Pritikin was recently on the faculty and a featured speaker at The Open Forum 2013 inColorado Springs, a national meeting of otolaryngologists focusing on cutting edge treatments for chronic sinusitis and a number of other sinus related conditions.
