Polyphenols are plant compounds thought to protect health and counter the effects of aging. Resveratrol acts like an antibiotic by protecting the plant from bacteria and fungus. Certain types of plants produce resveratrol in response to stress, injury, fungal infection and ultraviolet radiation (UV). Resveratrol has attracted media attention because of its potential anti-cancer and anti-aging benefits. This antibiotic compound is plentiful in the skin, pulp and seeds of red wine, purple grape juice, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries,1 peanuts,2 and Japanese Knotwood.3 Resveratrol has been found to inhibit the proliferation (rapid cell division) of a number of types of cancer, including breast, prostate, pancreatic, stomach, colon and thyroid cancers.4 While Resveratrol has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and animal models, studies are ongoing regarding the efficacy of high intakes of resveratrol to prevent cancer in humans. According to Dr. Joseph Maroon, author of “The Longevity Factor,” 5 “As aging occurs, cellular division is impaired. This causes the new cells to function poorly and die prematurely.” Harvard researchers recently published results of a study in the journal Cell indicating that resveratrol activates proteins called stabilizing proteins that are actively involved in the gene (DNA) repair process. By repairing breaks in the chromosomes, the effects of chromosomal damage due to aging are reduced.” 6 In grapes the resveratrol is found mainly in the skins and the quantity varies according to the origin, geographic location and exposure of the plant to fungal infections. The fact that one of the best sources of this compound is red wine has fanned interest among health conscious consumers and wine aficionados. However, commercially grown grapes may not have high levels of resveratrol, as these plants would have been chemically sprayed to fight off fungal and bacterial infections. The time in fermentation would also have a bearing on the quantity of resveratrol in wine.7 It is for this reason that synthesized high concentration extracts are often preferred for consistent and effective delivery of the health benefits. I bought into the daily mega-vitamin delivery of health supporting antioxidants more than 30 years ago and the latest science on this potent antioxidant prompted me to investigate. There are a number of resveratrol supplements on the market and I have been taking the organic ResVitale capsules twice a day for almost 2 months. I chose to try ResVitale because they are organic, vegetarian capsules (no gelatin, not tested on animals) and sourced from French organic grape vineyards. I don’t know that I look any more youthful, but I have to say that I do feel an extra boost of energy when I take the second capsule with my green tea in mid-afternoon.
