Why Pilates?

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Pilates is an exercise for all ages. No one illustrated that better than its creator Joseph Pilates. He both taught and practiced Pilates well into his mid-80s while sporting a physique of a man half his age. Pilates is a series of exercises performed on a mat or special apparatus. It combines both stretching and strengthening for the body at the same time. Pilates is a full body workout and treats the body as an integrated whole.
Pilates follows six key principles:
Centering - The abdominal center or “powerhouse” as it is referred to in the Pilates method is the primary source of strength for all exercises.
Concentration - This is the ability to utilize the mind as a tool to initiate change in the body.
Control - The body can be conditioned to control every aspect of its movement.
Breathing - Full and deep inhalation and exhalation are fundamental to every exercise.
Flow - The continuity of each movement creates heightened awareness in the body and can help prevent injury.
Precision - The attention to detail in each exercise allows both the mind and the body to work together in harmony.
Pilates is an extraordinary way to fulfill the body’s desire for a kind and gentle conditioning, and to improve and transform the human body. Everyone can benefit in some way from the method – professional athletes to seniors. Pilates once said “The acquirement and enjoyment of physical well-being is priceless to its possessors.” The benefits of a Pilates practice are limitless. Most students comment on their increased strength, flexibility and posture. For most people Pilates is an innovative and exciting new way to tone up and achieve results, where traditional gym workouts may have failed. Pilates creates long lean muscles without taxing the body unnecessarily. Now that summer is almost here, consider incorporating Pilates into your workout plan; nothing targets the abs like Pilates. Before you know it, you will be ready to slip into a swimsuit with a toned, strong and supple body. The warm weather and outdoor activities can encourage us all to “lighten up” both in body and spirit.
