(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Soy products have steadily grown in popularity in the past decade. While known to many consumers as an alternative to dairy and a source of protein for vegetarians, soy products are now going mainstream and popping up everywhere. As people strive to become more health conscious and to take better care of themselves, soy has become a multi-billion dollar industry. In fact, the soy food production is a $4 billion industry and has increases 1,000 percent over the last 15 years (SPINS).

Visiting a local supermarket proves the growth in popularity of soy. In fact, today there are more than 10 brands of soy milk. These products range from certified organic, allergen free brands such as ZenSoy, to store brands, such as Shaw’s Wild Harvest. Soy milk also contains comparable, and in some cases, more protein, calcium and amino acids than dairy milk.

But, soy milk is not the only way to reap the benefits of soy. There are puddings, such as ZenSoy Organic soy pudding, served in single-serve packages, snack bars, such as SoyJoy Strawberry and even ice cream, such as Soy Delicious. Traditionally, soy products had a very “beany” taste to them. However, tremendous strides are being taken in the industry to streamline the taste of these products. Soy pudding, ice cream and milk taste very similar, if not better than their dairy counterparts.

So what makes soy so healthy? Soy beans contain significant amounts of isoflavones, which help to lower cholesterol, fight osteoporosis and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Soy beans also contain DHA Omega-3, a key component of the heart and a structural fatty acid in the gray matter of the brain and retinas. The recommended daily DHA intake for a healthy adult is 220mg. However, the average American consumes less than 100mg. DHA Omega-3 also supports healthy brain and eye development in infants and toddlers. According to the DHA/EPA Omega-3 Institute, a depletion of DHA in the brain caused by insufficient intake has resulted in impaired learning ability.

Another cause for the popularity of soy products is the increased prevalence of food allergies. Lactose (intolerance of a sugar found in milk), dairy allergies and Celiac disease (the inability to process wheat gluten) have become more widely publicized. Soy products offer a great alternative to products containing lactose, dairy, or wheat. Most soy products are lactose and gluten free, making soy ice cream or pudding a great dessert that tastes great, but won’t make you sick. However, reading the label on foods is still very important to avoid a possible allergic reaction.

The nutrition and health benefits of soy products can not be denied. By promoting proper brain and eye function in children and reducing the risk of heart disease in adults, consuming more soy should be on everyone’s to-do list.
