Make This Super Bowl a Healthy One

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Super Bowl Sunday typically means a day of overindulging in high-calorie snacks – from mini hotdog croissants to heavy chili cheese dips. But there are a number of ways to make snacking healthy – and just as tasty – on game day.

Roschelle Heuberger, a registered dietician and faculty member in the Human Environmental Studies department at Central Michigan University, has conducted nutritional research for more than two decades. Heuberger says it’s easier than people think to plan better snacks. She offers a few of her own ideas here:

Instead of chips and dip:

• Pull out fresh veggies and serve with a healthier dip made with a cup of sour cream, a cup of yogurt and one packet of dry onion soup mix

• Cut up fresh fruit like strawberries and a variety of melons and dip with a low-fat strawberry or vanilla yogurt

• Serve pretzels: Buy a variety of shapes and sizes for a good variety

• Offer cubed reduced-fat cheeses

For better nachos, use:

• Blue corn tortilla chips

• 92 to 98 percent lean ground beef sirloin, add low-sodium taco seasoning

• Reduced-fat shredded cheese: Most Mexican blends are flavorful and melt nicely

• Bake in a shallow dish at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.

Top with:

• Light sour cream or mix half regular sour cream and half yogurt

• Olives

• Finely shredded romaine lettuce

• Fresh salsa, which can be found at most grocery stores in the deli section

• Homemade guacamole: Just peel ripened avocadoes and mash with fresh salsa. This is very high in the good fats your body needs and also promotes heart health.

Fire up the grill:

Buy low-sodium or salt-free seasoning and grill mini sirloin patties or chicken breast that can then be cubed up and topped with barbeque sauce. Don’t forget the toothpicks!

And for the drinks:

Instead of soda, make spritzers: Fill a pitcher two-thirds of the way full with sparking water and the remaining one-third with a pure fruit juice (orange mango, tangerine, pomegranate, or blueberry), which can be found in the refrigerator section.

Or make virgin Bloody Mary drinks: Mix low sodium tomato juice with a splash of Tabasco sauce, and toss in a toothpick with olives. Garnish with a couple of lime slices.
