(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Alexandria, Va. – The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) submitted comments on pharmacy’s role in counseling diabetes patients about their medications and helping to preserve access to diabetes equipment and supplies for Medicaid beneficiaries. The hearing, titled, “The Battle Against Diabetes: Progress Made; Challenges Unmet” was held today by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health.

Excerpts from the statement are below.

“Pharmacists are uniquely qualified as medication experts to work with patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and play a key role in ensuring patients take their medications as prescribed. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services provided by community pharmacists improve patient care, enhance communication between providers and patients, improve collaboration among providers, optimize medication use for improved patient outcomes, contribute to medication error prevention and enable patients to be more actively involved in medication self-management.”

NACDS also discussed in its comments how expanding the Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) Competitive Bidding Program would restrict patient access to diabetic equipment and supplies.

“This policy would limit participation in Medicare by retail pharmacies and would reduce diabetic patients’ access to life-saving supplies and services. To ensure that community pharmacists continue to play a role in the battle against diabetes it is vital that Medicare beneficiaries have continued access to diabetic medications and supplies through community retail pharmacies.”

“NACDS thanks the Subcommittee for consideration of our comments and allowing us to share our views on the role the community pharmacy can play in the battle against diabetes through the provision of medication therapy management and the importance of continued access to diabetic medications and supplies through community retail pharmacies.”

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) represents 154 traditional drug stores, supermarkets, and mass merchants with pharmacies – from regional chains with four stores to national companies. NACDS members also include more than 900 pharmacy and front-end suppliers, and over 70 international members from 24 countries. Chains operate 37,000 pharmacies, and employ more than 2.5 million employees, including 118,000 full-time pharmacists. They fill more than 2.5 billion prescriptions annually, which is more than 72 percent of annual prescriptions in the United States. The total economic impact of all retail stores with pharmacies transcends their $815 billion in annual sales. Every $1 spent in these stores creates a ripple effect of $3.82 in other industries, for a total economic impact of $3.11 trillion, equal to 26 percent of GDP.
