Dental Maintenance Tips

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - New York, NY – Since the moment we’re born, visits to the dentist are ingrained in our psyche as part of our yearly “maintenance” routines. As we age, the need to visit our dentist becomes more of a hassle than a necessity, and therefore many people end up putting off their visits for years at a time. Unfortunately for many Americans almost 1.2 billion metal fillings are expected to need replacing between now and the year 2010, leaving many adults wondering if they will need to start the maintenance process over from scratch.
According to New York City cosmetic dentist Dr. Daniel Noor, patients are skipping out on what is considered necessary dental upkeep simply because they do not have the extra time and money associated. Dr. Noor has seen a boom in his adult dental attendance over the past four years after the introduction of a new technology that has some adults actually anticipating a visit to the dentist. Dr. Noor introduced Ceramic Resurfacing (CEREC) to New York City about five years ago and since that time, his patients have access to cutting-edge dental care – so advanced that crowns, veneers and onlays are administered in a single visit.
What is CEREC?
When Dr. Noor introduced CEREC into his concierge-like practice 2003, the technology reached the height of its efficiency for use in a practice setting; it can replace old metal fillings, teeth that are decayed, weakened or chipped in one visit. CEREC uses digital imaging and 3-dimensional technology to eliminate the use of plaster impressions and since all the machinery is in-house, CEREC also eliminated the need for place-holders while the dental restoration is completed at a different location. Patients who have their work done have the chance to participate in their treatment – many take comfort in seeing the 3D image of their tooth and the restoration as it is created.
“Reconstructing a damaged tooth used to require multiple visits. The patient’s commitment was much heavier, they had to come in more than once to be drilled and anesthetized,” Dr, Noor said, adding that many simply waited until it was often too late to address an issue. ”After we introduced the CEREC machine, my patients became much more apt to attend to their dental issues simply because of the convenience of the technique.”
The CEREC Procedure
After Dr. Noor examines a patient and determines that CEREC is appropriate, the process is quick and simple. Depending on how much healthy tooth structure remains Dr. Noor will determine whether a complete restoration of the tooth requires a simple filling, a full crown or anything in between. Dr. Noor next administers anesthesia and prepares the tooth as would be done for other restoration techniques but that’s where the similarities end.
Dr. Noor snaps a digital picture of the tooth, which has been coated with a non-toxic tasteless powder, to obtain an Optical Impression. The CEREC 3D software converts the digital picture into a 3-dimensional model that appears instantly on the computer screen. Using that image, Dr. Noor artistically designs the restoration; when he’s done a simple click of a button sends the information to a milling machine, also in-office. About 10 – 20 minutes later a ceramic replication of the missing part of the tooth matching the patient’s tooth shade emerges from the machine – fully ready to be bonded into place. To ensure proper fit and completely eliminate the need for a repeat visit, Dr. Noor requires that patients mimic chewing and talk for a few minutes. Finally, the restoration is polished up and the patient can be on his or her way.
In a single roughly one to two hour visit to Dr. Noor’s office, patients can get a crown, a veneer or an old filling replaced – a convenience more and more people believe they cannot afford to live without. “In 2006 Americans spent more than $68 billion on dental care, and whenever anyone spends that amount of money they want to get the most they can for it,” Dr. Noor says. “With the economy as it is more than ever people are reluctant to take extra time off of work and now for about the same price as a traditional crown, by using CEREC we can do in a few hours what previously took sometimes three days.”
