Five-year Outcome for Single Tooth Implants
“This research offers unequivocal evidence that single-tooth implants offer the best option for long-term esthetics and improved oral function for anyone with missing teeth,” said AAID President Frank LaMar, DDS. “Further, the study shows that a one-visit implant procedures are almost 100 percent successful for patients with minimal bone loss when completed under ideal conditions.” Conducted in Italy by Marco Degidi, MD, senior lecturer at the University of Bologna Dental School and colleagues, the trial was designed to evaluate the long-term survival and bone loss of single implant restorations in patients monitored for five years. One hundred eleven patients were evaluated. In accordance with study protocol, subjects had no evidence of periodontal disease and did not require bone augmentation prior to receiving the implants. Results showed the overall, five-year implant success rate, as measured by cumulative bone resorption, was 97.2 percent. Implants placed into healed bone had better outcomes compared to those inserted in tooth extraction sites (100 vs. 92 percent). The failures occurred within four months and were attributable to protocol deviations, low primary bone stability and poor compliance with oral hygiene. “Implants are a win-win for patients and dentists,” said LaMar. “Implants do not decay or involve root canals.
