Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to restore the shape and feel of the breast following a mastectomy, a surgery that removes breast tissue to treat breast cancer. Silicone or saline implants do not recreate the exact look and feel of natural breasts, but they do offer significant benefits over other reconstruction options. Other procedures include Latissimus Dorsi Flaps, TRAM Flaps and DIEM Flaps, which remove muscle tissue and fat from a patient's shoulder or abdominals to recreate breast tissue. While these options provide a more natural feeling breast, they require invasive surgery and can lead to complications. For many patients, breast implants offer a quicker recovery without the need for additional surgery following the mastectomy. "Every patient is different, but I believe that breast augmentation offers the best solution for many breast cancer survivors," said Houston plastic surgeon Dr. R. Lee Steely. "With implant reconstruction, we can help restore confidence without the need for long recoveries." If you are considering breast reconstruction options, talk to your physician to determine the best augmentation method for you. About Dr. Steely: R.
