A new book offers hope, help, and direction to women with breast cancer — and those who love them.
(HealthNewsDigest.com) - While medical professionals prepare you for the physical effects of cancer, they seem to forget about your spirit, your emotions, and your sexuality. So how do you put cancer behind you and go back to being the woman you used to be?
In Intimacy after Breast Cancer: Dealing with Your Body, Relationships and Sex (Square One Publishers, 2010), two-time breast cancer survivor Gina Maisano shows women a new way to live their lives after cancer — and empowers them to feel happy, beautiful, and sensual again.
Maisano presents detailed information to help women who have just finished treatment for breast cancer, and have survived the side effects of surgeries and medications, reclaim a positive frame of mind and healthy body.
In Part One, Maisano shows how to cope with the emotional and physical scars of breast cancer so you can regain confidence and self-esteem. In Part Two, she delves into an honest discussion about your sexuality. In candid detail, and addressing both married and single cancer survivors, she explores how you can rediscover your sexuality; feel and look your best; and enjoy an exciting and fulfilling love life with your partner — perhaps even better than it was before.
Peppered throughout are humorous, poignant, and helpful stories by survivors that offer a wealth of personal perspectives and specific examples of physical recovery and emotional healing.
Readers can learn:
*
Ways to stay healthy and reduce your chances of recurrence

Love and intimacy don’t have to end because of breast cancer. In Intimacy after Breast Cancer, Maisano blends expert advice, scientific research, and firsthand experience to help ease the difficult transition from cancer patient to vibrant, self-confident woman and lover.
More women are surviving breast cancer today than ever before, and not just until the statistical 5-year benchmark. Many women are surviving for 15, 20, 30 years and later. While the medical community has been busy extending the lives of breast cancer patients, no one has been focusing on what kind of lives these women are going to live.
Lose weight. A study done by Harvard Medical School Brigham & Women's Hospital found that the more weight women gain post-diagnosis, the higher their chances of breast cancer recurrence.
Reduce fat intake. The National Cancer Institute found that after 5 years, women being treated for early-stage breast cancer who decreased their fat intake by 24 grams per day had a 24% reduction in their relative risk of recurrence.
Exercise more. Women who participated in 3-5 hours of physical activity per week after treatment cut their risk of breast cancer recurrence by
20-50%.

About the No Surrender Breast Cancer Foundation
Founded by Gina Maisano, the No Surrender Breast Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to improving the lives of women with breast cancer. “We take off the ‘white coats’ and break down the medical lingo that’s very hard to decipher under normal circumstances,” says Maisano, “but impossible under stressful conditions, such as a new diagnosis.” Through medically sound, doctor-reviewed information, everything is explained: pathology, treatment, types of breast cancer, surgical options, chemotherapy facts, wigs, nutrition, financial aid, legal resources, and much more. The comprehensive website also provides a
24/7 live, peer-driven support forum for women to join and share with other survivors. Here, newly diagnosed women, seasoned veterans, and advanced-stage women share personal experiences, tips, recommendations, and a deep bond that only survivors can form.
