(HealthNewsDigest.com) - ATLANTA – The Emory Breast Center has earned full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.
According to the NAPBC, accreditation is granted only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of breast care and undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of their performance. During the survey process the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease.
Surveyors review services and experience in 27 different standards, including diagnostic imaging, medical and radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery, genetic evaluation, nursing, and education and early detection programs.
The Emory Breast Center offers a comprehensive approach to breast health and breast cancer treatment, providing the very latest technology and research in a compassionate environment. The multi-disciplinary team of breast health specialists includes radiologists, medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, dieticians, nurse practitioners, and social services professionals.
“The Emory Breast Center is certainly deserving of this accreditation,” says Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD, executive director of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. “The Emory Breast Center’s focus on patient care, supported by a team of nationally and internationally recognized experts in every facet of breast health, is a resource for all of Georgia. NAPBC accreditation is an important recognition of this experience, research and unwavering focus on patient care.”
The American Cancer Society estimates that 5,370 women in Georgia were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. Receiving care at an NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:
• Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
• A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
• Quality breast health care close to home.
