(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Frequent flyers today need super hero skills. Organization is a must as you have been trained to pack a week’s worth of outfits, shoes, and intimates into one carry-on and one personal item. You need to be a multi-tasking maven to get to your plane without misplacing something—your boarding pass, your driver’s license, or your sanity. Flexibility is a big plus as plans can change on you without any notice. Since you can’t take your IT guy wit h you on the road, mastering the mysteries of Wi-Fi, GPRS and Bluetooth is an absolute necessity.

The first key to efficient packing is lightening your load. A well-packed suitcase should ideally contain coordinating pieces that resist wrinkles, no more than three pairs of shoes, extra accessories, and room for your one Ziploc bag of micro toiletries. The overriding goal is to eliminate non-essential items wherever possible. Minimize your clothing allowance by selecting a monochromatic (one or two) color scheme. Make use of extra space wherever you can find it; tuck lingerie into shoes, accessories into purses, electronics tucked into corners. It is a little known fact that rolling takes up less space than folding. Once you have done all you can to limit the amount of stuff you have to fit into your suitcase, if you still cannot close it, unpack and start over. You have only two choices: take another bag, or take more stuff out and leave it behind.

It takes planning to avoid getting nailed for overweight luggage, which can be costly now that airlines are imposing fees for second bags and heavy loads. Even if you have the lightest, largest piece of luggage, you can still end up being overweight at the airport. If you take the maximum amount of luggage allowed per person (1 or 2 bags depending on the carrier), go with medium sized bags to avoid paying extra on the weight
Smart women today have trained themselves to get on a plane with a single wheeled carry-on. With practice, you can make it for up to one week anywhere with only a 20" roll-aboard and an oversized handbag. Most women who fly frequently never check a bag if they can avoid it – mainly because they can't afford to be in a different city than their luggage and they don’t have an extra 45 minutes to spare to wait to get their bag. Airlines have become so slow at getting checked luggage off the plane, and lost luggage is so common that no one wants to check anything anymore. The flight delays that cause missed connections can leave you without luggage even when you do finally get to your destination. Another big advantage of limiting yourself to one carryon is that your rebooking options remain open in the event of a flight delay.

There is a store on almost every block no matter where you go, at least in the U.S., so you can purchase most of the basics you may need like toothpaste, deodorant and lip gloss. However, it is the personal things and the comfort of brands you love and specialty products that you miss most when you travel. Men don’t always understand the simple fact that not all shampoos are alike. Sure you can pick up some shampoo at any airport, or use the little bottles in your hotel, but they pale in comparison to your delicious Fekkai Technician Shampoo and Conditioner that smells like fragrant flowers and makes you hair feel like silk. Having your personal things with you on the road is a must for women.

FIVE FREQUENT FLYER LIFESAVERS
1. ON A CLEAR DAY – By filling out a few forms and getting your iris scanned and fingerprints taken at the airport, you can speed through security literally in minutes, jumping ahead of angry crowds giving you daggers. Worth the annual $199 fee times ten! www.flyclear.com
2. THE RIGHT WEIGH – Weigh your suitcase before every trip and change contents around before you get to the airport to avoid paying annoying overweight fees. www.edwardsluggage.com, www.bedbathandbeyond.com.
3. HOT WHEELS - For women, giant oversized suitcases have become unmanageable in today’s world. Just wait until you have to lift that bag into a car or up a flight of stairs yourself! The perfect rollaboard is 20-22 inches and fits front to back in most overhead compartments. Look for hidden pockets that can be stuffed as needed so you can check it on the way back if you want. Two of the best brands for durability and warranty: www.tumi.com, www.briggs-riley.com
4. XRAY LAPTOP BAGS – Welcome to the new TSA approved checkpoint friendly laptop cases so you don’t have to pull out your equipment and risk scratches and dents going under the scanner. Targus Zip-Thru® ($79 – 99) is one of the first on the market. www.targus.com
5. SHIP IT – If you are terrified that the airlines will lose your bags, and who isn’t, think Federal Express or UPS. It may end up being cheaper to use a commercial carrier and buy insurance, than to enlist one of the private luggage carriers to ship your bags ahead to your destination. Make sure to check your hotel in advance, as some hotels add a service charge for storage.
