As a follow up to my feature posted in early October, “Can Your Legislate Good Eating” you should be aware that the Senate is considering, a national LEAN Act. Senator Thomas Carper (D-Del.) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) proposed the Labeling Education and Nutrition Act (LEAN) to head off the spreading patchwork of menu labeling rules at the state and local level. LEAN would require restaurants and grocery chains with 20 or more outlets to provide nutrition information for menu items sold. Specials that are available for less than 90 days would be exempt. Restaurants have been struggling with the problem of menu labeling since NYC enacted citywide regulations earlier this year. A national initiative would bring uniformity to the process. It protects independent operators. It protects chains from lawsuits by providing one set of regulations nationwide. And, it gives the public information they want. Passage of this act will be challenging but national standards, like those in place for nutrition labeling of packaged foods, provides a universal platform to provide useful information to the public.
